UN Mission Urges Coordinated Action to Restore Stability in Eastern DR Congo
Speaking in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, MONUSCO chief James Swan said he held discussions with provincial authorities focused on strengthening cooperation, combating impunity, and promoting long-term stability amid continued violence involving armed groups.
As stated by reports, Swan reaffirmed the UN mission’s commitment to its mandate, particularly the protection of civilians affected by persistent attacks in conflict-hit provinces.
He noted that civilian populations continue to suffer from armed group violence, which has resulted in widespread displacement and rising intercommunal tensions.
Swan also emphasized that MONUSCO will continue working alongside Congolese security forces to provide physical protection for displaced populations while coordinating with humanitarian organizations and local communities.
His visit to the eastern provinces of North Kivu and Ituri marks his first field mission since assuming office in Kinshasa earlier this month.
Robert Seninga, president of the North Kivu Provincial Assembly, stressed that the activities of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which have been linked to serious abuses against civilians, should not be treated solely as a domestic issue.
He also called for stronger international engagement to ensure monitoring of ceasefire arrangements and improved protection for civilians in the region, where armed groups have remained active for years.
